Or also known as C-cure. C-cure is a light weight Cementitious concrete that is spray applied over a polyurethane foam roof. It is one of the most expensive foam roofs you can buy. The \u00a0c-cure has a very high fire rating and is usually applied on schools, government buildings, high traffic roofs or anywhere you need a fire rating. This is also Known as a Class A Roof<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was on one recently and took some pictures. The foam application part of the roof is just about as good as they come, but Cementitious part of the roof is as bad as they get.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The application of a Cementitious roof is as follows:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong>&nbsp;Polyurethane foam is applied at a thickness of the roof spec. usually @ 1 1\/2 inches or greater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong>\u00a0An elastomeric roof coating is applied @ about 1.5 gal. per 100sqft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong>\u00a0A second coat of elastomeric roof coating is applied\u00a0@\u00a01.5 gal. per 100sqft. and a 3rd coat @ 1.25 gal per 100sqft At this time a #6 Aggregate is applied into the wet coating @ the rate of about 35-40lbs per 100sqft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4.&nbsp;<\/strong>All verticles&nbsp;\u201danything above the roof surface\u201d walls, pipes, a\/c curbs t-tops ect. &nbsp;are coated with an elastomeric coating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5.<\/strong>&nbsp;Finally the C-cure is applied over the roof surface. It\u2019s applied in both directions to prevent voids. The dry thickness is 1\/4 of an inch. The finished surface should have a smooth apperance&nbsp;with only the top of the&nbsp;aggregate visable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below are some pictures of&nbsp;an inproper c-cure application that will lead to premuture roof failure. Good for the owner because the roof\u00a0 has\u00a0not yet completely failed. The\u00a0bad news\u00a0is a\u00a0$15000 c-cure recoat 10 years early (as of the time of this post).\u00a0The bottom line here is had the building owner used a roofing consultant to over see this roof installation he wouldn\u2019t have the problem he now has. This is more common than you might think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-origins-of-c-cure\">The origins of C-cure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>John Young of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youngbuilders.com\/application-process\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Young Builders<\/a><\/strong> is widely recognized in roofing circles as an early pioneer of the <strong>cementitious aggregate surfacing system used over polyurethane\/foam roofs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This wasn\u2019t just a coating \u2014 it was a <strong>durability upgrade<\/strong> to early SPF systems that struggled under Southwest UV and traffic conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-he-helped-pioneer\">What He Helped Pioneer<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>John Young\u2019s work focused on developing a <strong>hard mineral wearing surface<\/strong> that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Protected SPF from UV degradation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increased impact and traffic resistance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Created a thicker, more abuse-tolerant system<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Extended the practical life of foam roofs in harsh climates<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The system typically involved:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Spray polyurethane foam base<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cementitious or urethane-modified slurry<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Broadcast #6 mineral aggregate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seal\/top coat<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>This became a recognizable <strong>heavy-duty SPF protection approach<\/strong>, especially in the Southwest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-it-mattered-at-the-time\">Why It Mattered at the Time<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When SPF roofing was still evolving:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Early coatings chalked and eroded quickly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Foam exposed to sun degraded fast<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Roofs with mechanical equipment needed tougher surfaces<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The cementitious aggregate approach was one of the <strong>first real solutions for long-term SPF durability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-where-it-sits-in-today-s-market\">Where It Sits in Today\u2019s Market<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While modern elastomeric and silicone coatings now dominate, the Young-style cementitious aggregate system represents:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A <strong>historical milestone<\/strong> in SPF system evolution<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <strong>high-durability, mineral-surfaced protection concept<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A system still seen on older commercial roofs in Arizona<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It helped bridge the gap between <strong>early foam roofing<\/strong> and today\u2019s advanced coating technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bottom-line\">Bottom Line<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>John Young and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youngbuilders.com\/application-process\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Young Builders<\/a><\/strong> played a significant role in advancing the <strong>cementitious aggregate surfacing method over SPF<\/strong>, particularly in high-UV regions.
